Sally Tarr is a folk artist who creates Penny Rugs, a form of wool embroidery. “I first became interested in Penny Rugs while researching projects to create using the100% wool I had felted.  I was immediately drawn to the historic roots of this type of art.”  American women made Penny Rugs in the 1800’s using saved scraps of wool from items like clothing or blankets.  Penny rugs were not used as rugs for the floor, but rather used on tables and other furniture to brighten homes.  With her research in hand, Sally began to create her own rugs using wool she had saved and felted just like the women of the past.

    Sally is a lifelong hand crafter.  From knitting, crocheting, embroidery, cross-stitch, smocking, sewing and quilting, she has always been drawn to fiber arts.  Although her career was in education, Sally was the type of person who always had several projects going at any one time. Now that she is retired, she has the time to devote to her artistic passion.  Sally is enjoying discovering the many ways she can incorporate wool embroidery into her art pieces.

    Sally lives in St. Albans with her husband Wayne.  She enjoys spending time with her family when she is not creating art.
